Tragic.

Last night Twitter was buzzing with people speculating about an accident involving Jub Jub (of Ndikhokhele, Survivor SA and Mama Jackey fame). The first version of events I heard was that he was in a car accident and all the passengers died. Around 20.30 last night I heard that he’d been drag racing in Soweto and 3 children had died.

Here’s what we know for sure:
- Jub Jub and another person (some news reports say a friend) were drag racing their Mini Coopers along Mdlalose Street in Protea Glen in Soweto;
- They were driving side by side with one of the drivers facing oncoming traffic;
- When a car approached on that side, the driver tried to get into the correct lane, slamming into the other Mini;
- Both cars then knocked into a group of high school pupils on their way home from school;
- Four of those pupils died at the scene, while a fifth passed away this morning. Another one is still in critical condition at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital;
- The drivers appeared to be drunk at the scene and are being tested for drugs and alcohol;
- The two men are expected to appear in court today and will face charges of driving under the influence, reckless and negligent driving and four counts of culpable homicide.

This is beyond tragic. I don’t know why this has affected me so much. This morning, as I was getting ready for work, I kept thinking that there are four kids who should’ve been on their way to school, but aren’t. My heart goes out to the families of those kids. I can’t imagine how they must be feeling now. To lose someone you love in such a senseless manner… They’re in my thoughts.

I think another reason why this has hit home is because so much reckless behaviour goes down in Joburg unchecked. Only now that the results of this incident are so unbelievably tragic do we sit up and notice. But how many of us are going to use this as a chance to think about our own actions? I see so many people tweeting and hear so many comments about ‘On a Monday afternoon, nogal!’. That’s not the point. Would the (alleged) alcohol, drugs and reckless driving have been acceptable on any other day? How many of us drink and drive? How many people drag race (illegally mind you) just to show off our souped up rides? Let’s not condemn Jub Jub when we have huge ass logs in our eyes.

Believe me, I’m not condoning what he did… I just hope that justice – real justice, not celeb justice – is served.
