My favourite thing today…

17 09 2010

… Isn’t actually something I own. Yet. I stumbled across this lovely braided fabric necklace on the Needs Supply co wesbite and I really, really gots to have it.

Thief & Bandit Spring Forest Double Braid Fabric Necklace

But – because I used to be very crafty and creative and have since neglected that side of my life – I’ve decided to make one. And I’ll upload a pic once I’m done.

What’s happening this weekend?

10 09 2010

To put it bluntly: Too. Damn. Much. My body weary, but as a fully fledged member of the International Likers of Things Committee, I have to hit these here mean streets. I mean, if not me, then who, you know?

Tonight, there are a few options:
PARTY HARD at Latinova
OMG MTV Base party featuring Naeto C and HHP at Inc

Tomorrow night:
HENNESSY ARTISTRY at The Venue. If you’re not there, sorry for you…

Redd’s It Up at Randlords

10 09 2010

As promised, I got up close and personal with haute new JHB venue Randlords. The place really is spectacular. I have no words. I hope they sort out their (rumoured) liquor licence issues because summer’s (almost) here and this has the potential to become my party venue of choice. Just saying.

And I know I promised pictures, but, as Murphy’s Law would have it, my camera’s batteries were completely dead. Insert sad face here.

Anyways.

The best part about Randlords is definitely the views. Tjerrr. You can see the CBD, the Northern ‘burbs and there’s a great aerial view of the Nelson Mandela Bridge. I eavesdropped on a conversation between people more important than poor old me and, apparently, the rest of the South Point Towers building is going to be redeveloped into apartments. Like my future home, Main Street Life.

Big city lights: view from Randlords

Last night wasn’t just about me getting a sneak peek at Randlords (duh!), it was also the official launch of the new image, branding and taste of Redd’s. The apple cider also unveiled its new brand ambassadors: radio and TV presenter Mpho Maboi and presenter and actor Lungile Radu.

Mpho and Lungile - the new faces of Redd's

The new tagline – replacing Phola – is Redd’s It Up, which the press release says is: ‘a fresher and more energetic call to action for men and women who enjoy socialising with friends whilst out on the town’.

Mpho and Lungsta will travel across SA to Redd’s It Up with DJs Lulo Café, Warras and Zinhle.

One of these parties will be in Cape Town this December and, at the launch, two lucky ladies won the chance to hop on a private jet with three of their BFF’s to live it up at a mansion in Fresnaye and the Fire & Ice Hotel. City Press journo (and one of my besties) Mokgadi Seabi and PR guru Farrah Fortune won the prize. See you in Cape Town, ladies!

Stay tuned to your wireless (yes, wireless) to hear more about the competition. Thanks for a fun night out, Redd’s!!

Welcome to your Quarter Life Crisis, Elle US

10 09 2010

Elle US celebrates its 25th birthday with four twenty-somethings covering its October 2010 edition – Amanda Seyfried, Megan Fox, Lauren Conrad and Gabourey Sidibe.

The cover girl that I’m most excited about (the others are a bit on the yawn blah same old, same old side) is Gabourey. I’m so glad such a talented actress is getting props.

Gabourey covers Elle

BUT. What’s with the styling and the hair? C’mon now, surely the Elle US team could’ve done best.

Here’s what she says on the inside:

Gabourey Sidibe
Actress, Hollywood cliché slayer
Credits: Nominated for best actress Oscar in 2009’s Precious; plays Laura Linney’s mouthy high school student on Showtime’s cancer-is-hilarious dramedy, The Big C, and bully Latonya in the upcoming Yelling to the Sky.
On celebrating her twenty-fifth birthday: ‘Part of me thought it would be weird if people knew I was a grown-up playing a teenager in Precious. So I had a twenty-first-birthday party. We had drinks and went to a strip club called Shotgun Willie’s.’
Jersey cocktail dress with jeweled detail, Tadashi Shoji, $308. Brass necklace with crystal and glass, Fenton, $540.

Other things I love in this edition:

The dress Megan dons on her cover

Janelle Monae getting some shine on the inside

Janelle Monáe
Singer, Diddy protégé
Credits: Cofounded record label Wondaland Arts Society; released toe-tapping album The ArchAndroid, earning critical hosannas (from mainstream and indies alike) and an opening spot on Erykah Badu’s tour.
Wisdom gained so far: ‘Don’t get high off praises, and don’t get too low on critiques.’
How she’ll celebrate her twentyfifth: ‘On a space shuttle.”
Cotton shirt, Brooks Brothers, $90. Wool crepe and satin pants, Azzaro, $1,465. Vintage gold earrings with enamel and diamonds, $1,150, gold ring with onyx, $995, both, from Beladora, Beverly Hills. Brass bone cuff, Fawn by Jennifer Fisher Jewelry, $200. Lace-up and peep-toe leather booties, Christian Louboutin, $995.

All pics via.

My first (& maybe last) taste of Randlords

9 09 2010

So a while back, these images of a new club called Randlords in Braamfontein started circulating across the Likers of Things network. I haven’t been inside the place yet and I’ve been kicking myself because, according to the club’s site, they’re closed until further notice.

But … Isn’t there always a ‘but’? … I will be able to see if it’s as fab as everyone says because I’m headed to the Redd’s launch tonight, which is being hosted at the Braamfontein venue. Yay!

Tomorrow I’ll be back with some more pics and, hopefully, some good gossip.

Go shopping.

‘Whip My Hair’ – Willow’s a star

9 09 2010

It was inevitable – with parents like Will and Jada, of course Willow and Jaden were going to be stars. But I thought we’d at least have, like, 5 or 6 more years before their entertainment industry onslaught, right? Jaden’s already made an epic breakthrough as the new Karate Kid and Willow, who’s become known as a tween fashion icon, has just released a song called ‘Whip My Hair’.

This girl is NINE YEARS OLD. And, despite being 17 years her senior, I’m really feeling this song. But she’s 9. I really don’t know how I feel about this. My colleague, Refiloe, says Will and Jada are exploiting their children. But I don’t know, hey. These are Will and Jada’s kids. Showbiz is ‘normal’ to them. Eish… I don’t know hey. But, as I said, I’m really liking this song… I just need to prepare myself for when we have kids in nappies presenting Top Billing. Smdh.

Alice Walker

8 09 2010

The acclaimed author, Alice Walker

Last night I spent my evening with Alice Walker. Not exactly one-on-one… I went to the State Theatre in Pretoria where she read some of her work and shared some of her wisdom and experiences. It was amazing and powerful and reassuring and … You get the picture.

I’ll post more on this once I’ve gathered my thoughts clearly, but for now I’ll share the first poem she read to us. Prof Walker said that, when she visits a new country, she randomly opens one of her poetry collections and, wherever the page opens to, that’s the poem that’s specifically meant for that audience. This is what she shared with us:

What Will Save Us

The restoration to the cow
Of her dignity,

The restoration to the pig
Of his intelligence,

The restoration to the child
Of her sacredness,

The restoration to the woman
Of her will,

The restoration to the man
Of his tenderness.

Powerful stuff, right?
